Albania can help Nano’s regime: “Our positions have not changed, but your statements are not correct” Rugova: “I must say that the lowering of relations with the fellow combatant of the Serbian dictator, Milošević, worries us in Kosovo.” “Ramiz Alia perhaps helped with telecommunications and some other things, but not with spectacular statements” TIRANA - Kosovo President Ibrahim Rugova reacted sharply yesterday against the Nano-Milošević meeting and the position of the Albanian government after this event. Worried by the cooling of Albanian-Albanian relations, the leader of the LDK did not hesitate to publicly voice criticism of the head of the Albanian government. “We in Kosovo will solve our own issue. Albania can help both through its contacts with the world and on the economic front. In Kosovo there are frequent unrest caused by the Serbian regime,” he declared yesterday to the French television channel “France 2”. Despite the fact that one day earlier, as part of diplomacy on the Kosovo issue, he had contacted the President of Albania, Rexhep Mejdani, Rugova took the opportunity, from the screen of French Television, to declare that “Ramiz Alia has helped more than this regime”. Elaborating on this thesis, Rugova said that although between Alia and Kosovo “there have been disagreements and dissatisfaction,” he had tried to help with telecommunications and some other things, but “not with spectacular statements”. Linking this opinion to the Nano-Milošević meeting, Rugova said that this was “not correct” and had worried Kosovo “greatly”. “For us it is important to see clearly the position of the Albanian state. For us it is important to have Tirana’s support. A careful and active Tirana for Kosovo. We know how we will solve our issue,” he said. In the same context, Rugova did not leave out of attention the issue of the Albanian opposition parties either, declaring that “I do not want to speak about this.” TIRANA - The ruling parties and the head of government himself, Fatos Nano, did not deign to reply to the President of Kosovo. The Vice-Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Policy, Ethem Cuko, when asked by “GSH” about Rugova’s statements, gave this opinion: “Ibrahim Rugova is the leader of Kosovo. The Albanian government has respected and respects his role; nevertheless, his statements about Albanian-Serbian relations and about Albania’s relations with Kosovo are not correct.” The senior PS official further said that “Albania, in this very difficult period it is going through, needs a realistic and balanced foreign policy. However, the strategic objective of the new government remains support for the Kosovo cause. Therefore, it will not be at all difficult to work closely with the representatives of official Pristina.” Reminding that Nano had met Milošević in Crete, Cuko said that “this should not be considered an official meeting nor a change in Albania’s position toward Kosovo.” Nano and Rugova
