Nano: Bomb Serbia

Europe’s Prime Minister: Immediate air strikes Border massacre, 110 UÇK soldiers killed Ironically, just a few hours before the White House spokesman stated that the representatives of the UÇK, even if they were to declare Kosovo’s independence, would not have Washington’s support, news emerged of a bloody battle on the Albanian-Yugoslav border between Serbian forces and Kosovar Albanians. According to the first reports, about 110 people were killed, 90 of them UÇK soldiers, some of whom were Albanians from Kosovo who were returning from Albania to fight. This serious event, with dramatic consequences, has prompted the official authorities in Tirana to harden their stance toward Belgrade. Until yesterday, the Albanian prime minister Fatos Nano was just as moderate in his positions on the Kosovo conflict as President Meidani. But yesterday, speaking at a press conference in Rome during his tour of Italy, Mr. Nano called for immediate NATO intervention with air power against Serbia. His request also included military targets “that threaten the security of the region.” This is the first time Albania has officially addressed NATO with such a request. While President Meidani and Prime Minister Nano were often seen to share the same view, yesterday the Kosovo crisis divided their positions. Speaking on the television program “Kronikë”, President Meidani accused the Serbian side of acting recklessly, but said that “the solution to the conflict cannot be military.” The new reform package for cleaning up the administration is being prepared the state has turned the border into a war arms dump (PHOTO: ANSA)

A setback for Tirana even for the Balkan corridor

“Mediation with Belgrade” A setback for Tirana Even for the Balkan corridor Many promises with one condition... TIRANA - On Sunday evening, Albanians together with foreign representatives met in Tirana to discuss the possibility of a political way out of the crisis in Kosovo. If our country were to accept playing the role of mediator with Belgrade, then according to some diplomatic sources the possibility of support for regional projects would also open up, including the Balkan corridor[?]. However, such a condition has sparked debate, because it is seen as political pressure on Tirana at a time when the stance toward Serbia is hardening.

Mistake or betrayal

ALFRED MOSIËU We cannot halve a Kosovo that has already been halved! The war was ignited by Serbia’s crimes and not by the UÇK, but by the resistance of the innocent population. The party that truly wanted and still loves Kosovo has never seen it as a testing ground for revolutionary experiments. If Kosovo needs a solution today, it must be in line with the will of the people and with the protection of human life. The UÇK cannot be declared guilty for the blood that has been spilled. On the contrary, the main responsibility lies with the Serbian regime and with the indifference of those who could have stopped the massacre. The solution cannot come from surrender, nor from deals made over the heads of Albanians. Albania must speak clearly and with one voice. Any wrong concession would be a betrayal.
