OPINION When the Albanians are played like ping-pong FATOS ÇOÇOLI Indeed, the day has come to say that we are all to blame. This is because the entire country has become a victim. With our deeds in the service of the state, with our repetition of the 1997 scenario, we have hit rock bottom. In situations of national catastrophe such as these, we must wipe hatred from the blade of anger. Anger is legitimate when it is driven by an ideal. But there can be no ideals for people who set the country's ministries ablaze. These people who loot apparently have not gathered in the square for an ideal. They are there out of resentment over a job lost in customs, the tax authorities or a ministry, and out of a desire to regain their lost paradise—that is, the abusive milking of the state-cow. The state cannot be rebuilt and modernized with detachments like these. On the other hand, the parties in government must respond responsibly to their mistakes and not defend themselves by attacking the opposition. This cannot be done by bringing back to people's minds the tragedies of March 1997 and blaming yesterday's rulers, who may have shared responsibility. At that time, many intellectuals strengthened the illusion that capable and qualified staff in the state administration would generally be treated fairly. Unfortunately, that hope was reduced to a hollow joke, and often even to bitter sarcasm, whenever people were mistreated in state institutions solely because they held different political views. You would even offer your hand and say: “Don't be upset, we're opposition supporters, but we're brothers!” Today, when tempers are more inflamed than ever, when regional divisions are regarded as unwritten laws, only the uniting of the country's political forces and the expression of their will in a political reconciliation pact will be the true path to salvation. Looking ahead, we have only one way out: a unified political will to build the state in Albania. Stability does not come from the desire and declarations to achieve stability and reconciliation, nor simply from putting one's signature to a pact. Our political will as a political force must be strong enough, day after day such detachments. On the other hand, the opposition parties must respond more the opposition. You cannot retain the electorate and immunize it against the mistakes of today’s administration by merely bringing the disasters of March 1997 back to people’s minds and blaming yesterday’s rulers. Power must be won every day, by making every effort to meet the immediate demands and long-term aspirations of the people who entrusted it to you. The story of a saying that initially warmed the hearts of many of our citizens must never be forgotten: “Opponents, but brothers!” When it was said (in 1993), it eased people’s tense spirits because it embodied tolerance and, at the same time, extended a hand as fellow Albanians, with an offer of sincere cooperation, in the name of the common interest. from a desire or declarations of stability and reconciliation, nor simply from signing a pact. The political will of each political force must be put into practice every day, and the division of roles must be accepted: the government governing and the opposition offering constructive criticism of the government. Only such an honest and responsible political contest would send a message of security to the international community, so that it can help us. Only if we meet this challenge with a united will will we have hope of integrating into Europe, which means the prosperity desired by all Albanians.
