TIRANA - The catastrophic financial situation of the special service unit of the Republic of Albania, “Renea,” has led, because of the failure of their main mission, for some of its members to seek reassignment from another unit, serving as bodyguards for prominent figures. Members of our country’s elite unit, known as anti-terror, have not been paid for several months and, alongside the military training and difficult missions they carry out, have also been forced to work as bodyguards. This time they would have been the escorts of a collector from whom the famous painting by Edi Hila was stolen on Thursday in the middle of Tirana. In the Prime Minister’s Office they express surprise at the news; in the Ministry of the Interior they also say they learned of the case from the newspaper, but they do not deny it. A “Renea” operative, who wanted to remain anonymous, says the unit’s financial situation is critical. They have not received salaries and are disappointed by the treatment. According to him, this has forced them to take private jobs to secure income.
