EDITORIAL Andi Bejtja The latest survey on the media by the Media Institute, published in the book “Human Development Report in Albania,” offers no grounds at all for optimism about the print press and the work of print journalists in general. What is most worrying is not the fact that most of the population, who mainly live in the countryside, do not pick up these newspapers, nor the further fact that only 25% of people who buy newspapers read them every day, but that 60% of those interviewed think the print press harms the life of Albanian society. This fact, on the other hand, shows that despite some imbalances in newspaper prices, despite the aversion most people feel toward the press, and despite the poor infrastructure in the country, the press continues to be a force that affects our lives for better or worse. Meanwhile, although those interviewed express this optimistic view, approximately 60% also say that the quality of information has improved. So why does the print press harm social life? The report offers an explanation, attributing this image to the fact that the press is conflictual and an extension of politics. This is true to some extent. Continued on page 24

IN GREECE The mystery surrounding the gruesome murder of 20-year-old Albanian Artan Hoksholi in the Holomona region of Halkidiki has been solved. According to Halkidiki police detectives, the perpetrator is 25-year-old Greek national Asterion Gausghis, and the reason was... a horse! On page 19
