Until this moment, most Albanians are convinced that the SP and its left-wing allies are gathered together to build socialism, to govern the country, to pull Albania out of the cursed transition. The official government concept is in fact the development of a market economy and a modern state, and not communism or socialism. Even in the June 1997 election campaign, the SP at the time did not mention socialism to its voters, while the communist allies have been very sparing with red terms. Nevertheless, in public opinion and among its electorate, the ideological labels “left” and “right” still do the work, although in Albania they confuse more than they clarify. It is enough to say, for example, that part of the leadership of the SP thinks like a right-wing government, or that the united right is moderately seeking the center, for a great deal of confusion to arise in the public. Regardless of what the parties themselves say, to the public and to their electorate the parties are what they have always been, even if these were things previously forbidden and hated. For a long time, only Ismail Kadare has been sparing with ideological labels. Neither left nor right, he made a quiet choice in favor of the West, without obeying either socialist realism or folkloric anti-communism. But, to everyone’s surprise, in one of his latest comments he called the Nano government “neo-communist”, and he seems to have given right to those who think that in Albania the old left still rules. This definition by Kadare, made at a time when Nano was quarrelling with his left-wing allies, proved something else: when you insult them, politicians come together. Immediately after the writer’s statement, an entire chorus of socialists and allies, from moderates to nostalgics, rose in defense of the government and against Kadare. This is perhaps the only point where the Albanian left and right can find a common language: when they are touched by a moral authority who rebukes them.
