Fatos Baxhaku People were coming down from the hills like flies, carrying automatic rifles in their hands. It was strange, because this was the first time I had seen crowds with weapons in their hands. They came and gathered in the square in front of the Town Hall. I also saw Ajdari, Pollo, Imami and several others. All with frozen faces. The city was silent. It seemed that something big was about to happen. From the crowd, every now and then, there was a shout, then applause, then insults. Further away, people were talking about snipers, about an attack, about a plan to kill Fatos Nano. Others did not believe it. Others remained indifferent. But the tension was felt everywhere. We set off toward Vlorë on a journey that seemed like a march through a foreign land. At the entrance to the city, the police were absent. People looked at us suspiciously. Later we learned that three snipers had been caught, believed to have been intended for use against the PS leader. In the center of Vlorë the situation worsened. Stones began to fly, people ran, the wounded fell one after another. There were at least seven injured. Amid cheers and insults, PD tried to return to Vlorë. It was a difficult, bitter and dangerous return.

Why Hoxha Came Out Against Long Hair

The influence of foreign shows, foreign fashion and outward appearance was felt among all the young adolescent boys and girls. The boys wore their hair down to the nape of the neck, wore cowboy trousers, wore shirts with wide collars and left the buttons undone down to the chest, wore amulets around their necks, and decorated their fingers and hands with rings set with precious stones and various chains. The girls cut their hair in different styles according to foreign models and wore tight, body-hugging dresses. These foreign forms strangely and quickly fitted the taste and upbringing of both male and female high school students. This created an unpleasant looseness in schools and a fashion psychosis rooted in family upbringing, where there was more room for luxury and appearance than for cultural and moral formation. It went so far that the students of the "Sami Frashëri" secondary school in Tirana kept secret notes about which students wore their hair longer and which wore fashionable clothes. The fight against foreign manifestations took on broad dimensions as early as 1973. According to an article in the newspaper "Mësuesi" dated 15 March 1973, 16,000 young men and women changed their outward appearance as part of the campaign against foreign manifestations. All the schools in the country were involved in this campaign. In some cases teachers and parents also used direct pressure. This document conveys the atmosphere of the time and the way the issue of hair and young people’s appearance was treated in socialist Albania.

Amnesty for Albanians Without Permits
Apostoli: Legalization first
TIRANA - The swift campaign against Albanian migrants without permits has produced some results. According to the Italian police, from 1 January until now 1,300 people have been expelled. Most of those detained have returned to Albania by ferry or by other means. Meanwhile, in Tirana and Rome the possibility of an amnesty for Albanians in Italy without documents is being discussed. Apostoli has declared that the only solution is to legalize them before punitive measures are taken. According to him, many of these migrants are already integrated into the labor market and such a measure would avoid social tensions. The proposal has opened a debate in political and diplomatic circles.
