Old age there was not seen as a burden, but as preserved wisdom. In this sense, our society has remained tied to old divisions, and the past and the experience of elderly people are often despised. The elderly are a nation’s memory, the family’s maturity, and the authority of weighed words. Too often we set aside those who have seen more than we have, and thus lose the sense of continuity. A civilized society is built not only on the impulse of youth, but also on the balance of experience. The elderly are needed not only for pity, but for respect and listening. On page 11
