Where is Albanian political ethics?

OPINION / Today's politicians facing the figure of Lumo Skëndo First author L... the individual is in ... and that in order to move forward, the nation’s material base and that of its cell would also have to advance. This is a modern and enlightened perception of the issue of national education at a time when Albania, newly emerged from the darkness of Anatolia, needed a jolt. Konica used to rebuke the country’s writers for busying themselves with cards and tallava, while Europe was racing toward decadence. Konica spoke rightly and more pertinently to the future of the Albanian state and nation. Bearing this problem in mind, I am reminded of a text by Mustafa Kruja about Mid'hat Frashëri, where he said that "despite his vast knowledge and high culture," Mid'hat nonetheless remained a pure Albanian. That is all. This is the highest definition that can be given to a personality who is such not merely because he knows the history, language, folklore, or customs of the country, but because he loves them. A person with universal culture is a citizen of the world, but if he does not love his country, he remains a dry cosmopolitan. Being a pure Albanian, Mid'hat Frashëri could not help but see the Albanians and Albania through the eyes of those who are only Albanians. He saw them with love and compassion, with faith and anger, with hope and protest. Both at the same time. For this reason he was harsh with our national vices and merciless with the moral and political diseases of the country. Continues on page 12

WHY THE ELDERLY ARE NEEDED

Spartak Ngjela It has been 7 years since I have been separated from my relatives every seven days. During the time when I went to the United States, I saw honorable and noble elderly people who showed respect to one another and enjoyed the respect of the young and the mature. Old age there was not seen as a burden, but as preserved wisdom. In this sense, our society has remained tied to old divisions, and the past and the experience of elderly people are often despised. The elderly are a nation’s memory, the family’s maturity, and the authority of weighed words. Too often we set aside those who have seen more than we have, and thus lose the sense of continuity. A civilized society is built not only on the impulse of youth, but also on the balance of experience. The elderly are needed not only for pity, but for respect and listening. On page 11

In entire neighborhoods, people are forced to fetch water with carts, jerry cans and improvised tools, adapting the whole rhythm of life to the supply schedule.
