Today, in its last edition for 1999, the newspaper chose to send a message and a special greeting to those people who will spend tomorrow evening, the last celebration of this year, in the cells of Albanian prisons. Not forgetting those deprived of their freedom who are outside Albania. We simply say Happy New Year to all those who will continue serving their sentences behind cold walls tomorrow as well. We truly want our greeting to reach these prisoners a little more warmly, for one simple and sole reason: they do not have the right to choose where and how to spend this celebration. We, who have the possibility to choose, chose today—on the last day the newspaper is published in ’99—to inform our readers on our inside pages about everything that will happen on the evening of December 31 in Albanian prison cells. We are truly sorry that, unlike on other occasions, the senior prison administration has created more accommodating and humane conditions for this category of prisoners, so that at least for one night—this coming one—they may feel closer to us.
