It is more than clear to the Albanian state that the time has come to look, if only a little, but with true eyes, at the work of the police and of policemen. Enough of such miserable men who, through incompetence and brutality, have turned the name of the policeman into a terror-psychosis for citizens, as is the case of recent days in Tirana and Korçë. Not all policemen are like that. There are honest ones among them. Not all policemen are undereducated or lack culture to the point that they are only able to arrest, drag by the hair, or beat innocent people simply because they seem suspicious! There are also educated ones among them. Neither their courage nor the sacrifice these public-order officers make at the head of their duty, fighting against anti-social elements, can be denied. Yet there are also those who compromise this humane duty in service of the people with their unworthy behavior. We did not write these lines either to heap praise on the police forces or to stain them as corrupt. We simply wrote an article in which we showed that there are also many evils within the ranks of the Albanian police. There is no need for some ruffians, who do not know how to defend the honor already stained by themselves, to throw mud at the newspaper or its journalists over this. They should do that by checking the lines of their own conduct, not with insults and threats. In our city no one even dares to mention the danger, even by naming it, because it still seems suited to the old regime that moves with lists of enemies and with prejudice or denial of personal rights. The commanders of the police stations must understand that a free press and free speech cannot be smeared by their ignorance. This shows that they have also taken on the role of leaders with a certain arbitrariness in the misuse of power. Enough with those policemen who go into bars insulting owners and customers, who strike young men without cause, who arrest people simply because someone asks for accountability for violence, who use street thuggery and animal-like language. If the police remain filled with such people, then order will never be established in Albania. The article criticizes brutality, ignorance and abuse inside the Albanian police, while acknowledging that not all officers are the same and that some are honest and dutiful.
