I wish RD would keep the word it gave IN ITS FIRST ISSUE

Interview with Mr. FROK ÇUPI on the first anniversary of the publication of the newspaper «Rindja Demokratike», given to our editor Aleksandër Frangaj (From left: F. Çupi - A. Frangaj. Photo Leon Çika) Mr. Çupi, how do you experience the first anniversary of the newspaper «RD»? Part of the opinion expressed a few days after the first issue of this newspaper has been used, in a sense, as an argument in defense of the newspaper itself. Is that how you see it? Its first issue? That was how it was that day. So it was part of the people... or part of the mind of all those who had entered the repeated desecration of the dictatorship, to show[?] with wonder the dictatorship, undoubtedly it was. So, even then it was only a part, just part of the people... because here too there has been, and this may have been part of the propaganda of «RD» — they take more from the hands of excess and of the long quickly and there is not[?]. Here they have seen it, bear in mind that from itself this is different[?] and comes to not disgrace[?] and from us to not disgrace[?] (Many of those who have been in to not disgrace[?]) ... [text partially illegible due to page quality] How do you see the future of «RD»? It still has eyes still eyes It still today and has[?] that the truth is awaited in the moment that its governance will be lost with victory with sig[?], that and comes a greater one of all[?] its. This is certain if a good part is[?].

A MESSAGE WITHOUT POLITICS

— Following the television correspondent’s conversation — Invited last night to the TV news, the Deputy Minister of the Interior, Sali Shehu, gave an interview which, for most Albanians, we would have expected more calmly, if VFT[?] had presented it to us differently from the way it came, since in the end in a government per[?] to it only HE himself has the right to speak. In short, our parties (homë politikë?) should have let the correspondent do his job, although for millions of inhabitants of a certain civilization television has more to do with the purity of communication than with political noise. In any case, regarding the deputy minister’s message, which mainly tried to show the state of public order after the arrests of recent days and to give assurances that the police are acting professionally, several points could be singled out. He dismissed the exaggerated rumors about the situation that had been created, said that measures had been taken to restore calm, and that the security forces would act against anyone who breaks the law. His own labeling of it as a «message without politics» makes the contrast with the way it was delivered even more evident. Calm was spoken of, but in an irritated tone; information was spoken of, but through interruptions that broke the flow of thought. In a society emerging from fear, the citizen needs precise words, not noise. (To be continued on page 7)

THE EXTINCTION OF A CLAN

Short story: Marë[?] came. As soon as she arrived, N[?] on four wheels sapa. Elga closed the door[?] Short story: Marë[?] came. As soon as she arrived, N[?] on four wheels sapa. Elga closed the door[?] None[?] moved. Not even for politics. Not because of the skies. Not because of the darkness. People moved as if pushed by an invisible hand. The houses were silence. Somewhere a woman’s voice could be heard. The children stayed behind the doors. The old men spoke in half-voices. In the big yard, someone lifted a sack. Someone else wiped the threshold. N[?] was the first to say it: «Maybe this is the last time». But no one asked him anything. Everyone knew what he meant. From the end of the street a tall man in a black coat came. He went in without knocking. In the evening, when frost fell over the rooftops, it seemed as if the whole clan was dying out in silence, not from death, but from departure, from fear, from the emptiness left behind by an entire era.
