The Latecomers, Perhaps, Will Not Find Any Free Seats in Albania

He came to discuss cooperation with the owners of TV and the independent newspaper «Koha jonë». Mr. Grauzo owns two television stations, two radio stations and the largest newspaper in Sardinia. In general, I want to tell you that as soon as you enter the city of Lezhë, it gives you a feeling of calm. That was my first impression of Albania. Coming not for business, as is usually the case, but as someone who is only observing to see the situation and how it is developing, I felt that many things had changed. - We came with a public challenge, because everything had remained unsystematic. Our position on the present and future of your country has by no means been to flatter anyone, but to tell the truth without sugarcoating things. Let us understand by going straight to important topics, for example by talking about private television and radio, the free press and economic opportunities. - Private television has been at the center of our interest. In your country the infrastructure is still lacking, whereas in my country private media have advanced much faster. These things cannot be compared mechanically. Albania has its own conditions and must find its own path. - Can you explain your view more clearly? - It seems to me that private television should not be seen simply as a business, but as a means of communication that connects society with change. In Albania, where people have long lived with controlled information, opening up the screen and the newspaper is a kind of breathing space. This does not mean that everything is solved at once. - And what is your assessment of the newspaper «Koha jonë»? - I have the impression that this newspaper has an interesting role. I saw young people, willpower and a desire to do journalism differently. If this energy is preserved and if there is material support, it can become a new school of thought. In Albania everyone wants to talk about freedom, but freedom must also be organized. - What impressed you most in Albania? - Your society is still in a transitional phase and this can be seen everywhere. There is poverty, but there is also a thirst to move forward. Many things seem unclear to me; nevertheless, I am convinced that change will not stop. The question is who will lead it and how quickly people will understand their own interests. - What is your opinion on foreign investment? - I think foreign capital will come, but not immediately and not if a serious climate is not created. No one invests in a country where the law guarantees nothing. There is a need for banks, advertising, communication and above all trust. Trust is not built with words, but with everyday actions. - And private media? - They are necessary. A country that wants to become democratic must allow not only a private newspaper, but also private radio and television. I believe Albania will get there, but time matters. The latecomers, perhaps, will not find any free seats in Albania. - Thank you for the interview. - Thank you.

At Midnight on New Year’s Eve It Showed Who the Private Firms Were

After several days of advertising on TV for the 1992 New Year’s greetings, the names of the firms KOSOVA KONUJ, HALAJ, etc. appeared with applause for a lek. Because the TV advertisements shown on television during 1992 were announcing the creation of several first private firms and their holiday greetings. The article comments on this phenomenon and the way it appeared on television. All night long, it seems, from the photos I took, Albania has been running-lettering-Albania or... the text is so serious-Albanian or... It writes to laugh or... such firms have arrived even in Albania... But New Year’s greetings are made to bring joy. Even family is thought to have changed the meaning of what they show on TV. There is another such greeting in which the name “ELA” seems the same as the one used by the TV network, or it looked like a New Year’s greeting “But ...” nothing! ELVIS SONAJ

A Representative of a Kosovar Company Has Gone Missing

The newspaper supplement with aid has arrived, along with half of the class from the commercial high school, and for breakfast in the school lunchroom of «Koha jonë». Since 2 December 1991, the representative of a Kosovar company, KOUNJ, HALAJ, has been missing. More than a month has passed, but there has been little new information about his disappearance. Since we are in the press center and with the planned future publication of a file with accurate data, we thought we would publish some preliminary information for our readers. He was generally among a crowd of people with private vehicles and taxis, and he disappeared and never came back. These testimonies give us a vague and shocking picture. Can you give details about your career and how you entered this very special profession? Self-consumption. - I have just visited the coastal city of Lezhë. The first impression was calm, but interrupted by a strange movement. It seems to me that Albania today is a country where everyone is looking for something and no one really knows where to find it. - Under what circumstances did he disappear? - We had just arrived by a means of transport and, after getting off, he separated from the group. We did not realize it immediately. Only later, when we counted ourselves, did his absence shock us. We searched the city, asked people, but with no result. - Where are you from? - From Kosovo. - Do you think politics has to do with this event? - I cannot say for sure. At that time everything in Albania seemed mixed with politics, fear, insecurity. Even such a disappearance could take on different meanings. - What do you expect now? - At least to learn the truth. If he is alive, for him to return. If something has happened to him, then the truth must come out. Silence is the heaviest thing. The article states that the missing person was last seen near Lezhë and that the suspicions are linked to the movement of private vehicles and unknown people. The article raises questions about security and the lack of response from the institutions. EDMOND KAÇINI
