On November 18, at 8 o’clock, the trial between Blerim Çela and Nikollë Lesi will take place in the city of Lezhë. Please come in person on the day of the trial, and do not send a lawyer in your place. Of course, you should bring your lawyer, but not without coming yourself. I am addressing you publicly because, as we have been hearing, you have decided not to make the trip to Lezhë on November 18. You filed the lawsuit against me as a citizen and not as Chairman of the State Audit, so under the laws currently in force you are not entitled to authorize anyone else to appear in your place by power of attorney. Even if the law allowed it, you should come to court like a man. I believe you should remember your civic duty. I welcome you! NIKOLLË LESI

The first reports about the activities of Mr. Blerim Çela, head of the State Audit, in the USA have arrived from unofficial sources. In his capacity as an election-campaign expert, he went there to lend a strong hand to President Bush’s re-election campaign. Among Mr. Çela’s many statements, the local press singled out: 1 — If Bush does not win, make no mistake: Albania will not help America. 2 — Americans: Give your votes even to Saddam Hussein, but never to Bill Clinton.

WILL HIS «RD-TD» FRIENDS OBEY? On November 3, at the first round table since Berisha came to power, the latter called for ethics in the press, asking party leaders to use their influence over their respective newspapers. Thus, Mr. Berisha returned to an issue he had mentioned during his visit to the district of Dibër, where he had stressed that the vulgarization of the press was also being encouraged by some of his journalist friends, alluding to the journalists of «RD-TD», Xhevat Mustafa, Afrim Krasniqi, Mujo Bucpapa, Rakip Suljoviç, and others. Judging by the facts (see the «RD-TD» newspapers over the past two or three months), the president’s friends sometimes carry out his instructions and at other times disregard them. Meanwhile, there are voices saying that the president himself encourages them, in effect telling them: Don’t listen to what I say in front of the microphones; you carry on with your trade! At the November 3 meeting, the president touched on the issue of information from unconfirmed third-party sources. The record for this type of information is once again held by the ruling party’s press, which has branded as agents everyone who has criticized the PD. A good many such items have also reached the newspaper «Koha jonë», and continue to arrive. In view of the president’s message, this newspaper is considering whether not to publish them. SPIRO LITO

Bill Clinton won the US presidential election, bringing to an end what was called the Reagan era in American politics. The political forces in Albania were, of course, not indifferent to this Bush-Clinton contest. Thus, the founders of the «Democratic Alliance» party, during a discussion on this issue, predicted and wished for Democrat Clinton’s victory from the very beginning. In a letter sent to him by Mr. Neritan Ceka in September, after explaining the orientation of the newly formed Albanian Democratic Alliance, which was to embrace and implement the principles of a liberal democracy, the ADA expressed confidence in Clinton’s victory and its readiness to contribute to the development of relations between Albania and the USA. The Democratic Alliance’s prediction came true, and this was a test of sound political judgment. But that does not mean that Mr. Selami, who wished for a Bush victory, was very wrong.

I read the notes published in «ZR» on November 4, 1992. I know those good Kosovar boys. As far as I know, the event they describe did happen that way. Others who know more know the truth, which is painful for me and for them. Another time I will speak about the «svjet», and together we will talk about the judges, since there have been such people among Albanians. Those boys can be proud that they did not serve the judges, just as it is to my credit that I am being open. As for Ilir Yzeiri’s note, the logic of the circumstances allows one to accept the reasoning that the departure of the editor-in-chief, who had been placed in the «focus» of the former State Security, apparently has been replaced by another one placed under the thumb of the SHIK. Expressed mathematically, the derivative is clear. There is no longer any need to know the pseudonym, since we know the name. In this sense, the popular saying «Like shorn sheep, the barber’s razor» seems to fit there. The second one, although he has a beard, is shaved. LUAN POZARI

As we have learned, these days the Minister of Culture decided to dissolve the Directorate for the Protection of Copyrights within the ministry, where Mr. Neshat Tozaj worked as its director. It seems the dissolution of the directorate was the best way to dismiss Mr. Tozaj, who recently wrote something against today’s people in power. This happened precisely these days, when Mr. Tozaj is not here but is on official business in France. Nevertheless, we believe Mr. Tozaj himself will explain this matter better when he returns to Albania.
