LEZHA and the great flood
Martin Leka
18 NOVEMBER 1992, MORNING
To begin with, let us recall that the flood started on 17 November 1992 and the water fell with unstoppable and furious force. The only ones did not flee, but with rushing, anxiety, fear, walls, running carefully like a father’s effort; the water level rose as high as the warehouse door. News agencies raised the alarm. If in the future there are such conditions as bad weather, snow, increased rainfall, there may be flooding. He whispers that there is no such thing. Therefore the population must be mobilized in order to resolve the critical situation.
Our present time is difficult, but it certainly remains strong like autumn, the frost in the mountains of the North where havoc is being wreaked. Lezhë is also going through difficult times. 45 villages were flooded, over four hundred houses were evacuated. Thousands of hectares of agricultural land were blocked and the apple trees were hit by frost; all the low-lying fields, Ishulli i Lezhës, Tales, Torovica, the mouth of the Mat, Zejmeni, Balldreni, the city hills, Fishta, Kallmeti, etc., stretch in an inseparable chain. People are terrified. The depth of the water in many houses reaches more than a meter. Incalculable difficulties for livestock, grain, and household items.
The wind was blowing in the streets. The prefabricated houses have been damaged and torn from their foundations. In some neighborhoods there is no electricity, bread is lacking, food is lacking. The rain continues without interruption. Along with this, the waves on the shore slam against the walls. The whole city is under stress. For just a few hours, Lezhë took on the appearance of a city struck by a natural disaster.
