Whoever attacks press freedom has attacked democracy
This will do us no harm, say the men in the regions, who have rusted the communist regime from a worthy model. The unconstitutional organs of living communism do this by means of censorship before the people, while those accused are denounced through political and criminal trials, media scandals and denunciation. It is not the independent voice of the people, but the voice of those who stand before the law and who organized the conspiracies to control the press. They try to carry out massacres in the press.
Throughout the entire period of the last government, it has become clear to everyone that press freedom, and the guarantee of it, are among the most important foundations of democracy. This freedom, which most Albanians won with so much effort and suffering, is being called into question by repeated administrative, judicial and police actions that seek to intimidate, strike at, and restrict the free press.
The free voice of the journalist is one of the main guarantees of the existence of an open society. When that voice fades, all other freedoms are put at risk. Therefore, the response of public opinion, democratic forces and journalists themselves must be firm and clear.
In Albania, until a few years ago, everything was controlled by the state. Newspapers were not the property of the public, but tools of propaganda. Today, when the hope for an independent press has finally been born, any attempt to bring it back under the tutelage of institutions or interest groups is a serious threat to democracy itself.
An attack on free journalists is an attack on the truth, and at the same time on citizens’ right to be informed. Without this right there can be no free citizens, no fair elections, and no control over power. Any society that gives up press freedom gives up freedom itself.
The attack on journalist Frangj Shtylla is a clear expression of this mentality. But this is not merely a personal conflict, nor an isolated case. It is a test of how far arbitrariness against free speech can go and how capable society is of defending its fundamental values.
Press freedom cannot be defended with empty declarations. It is defended by law, civic courage and professional solidarity. If we remain silent today in the face of an attack on one journalist, tomorrow it will be far too late to react when democracy itself is attacked.
