Reply to the newspaper “Zëri i Popullit”, regarding the article “There was a quarrel between Agim Haxhiu and Nikollë Lesi” about the platform of the newspaper “Koha Jonë” . We felt sorry for our colleagues at “ZP” A few days ago, on the front page of a gloomy day, “Koha Jonë” was accused of having its activity commented on in Iran, and of the campaign we had undertaken against the theses of the newspaper “ZP” and others, which supposedly made us extremely dangerous. The majority of last year, in an independent newspaper and among writers, believed that the free press is truly free. Still less did the newspaper “ZP” attack us unjustly; we, in the name of truth and in order to clarify matters with Albanian public opinion, are addressing today our colleagues at “ZP”, after a long pause in this kind of polemic. As is known, after a long wave of persecution and confiscation of the independent press, at the beginning of this year it was possible to legalize our newspaper as well. Not only that, but on the day of its first issue there had been an attempt to create a propaganda front not only against the most reactionary elements, but also against those pseudo-realists who try at all costs to reinterpret the past and use it in the service of today’s politics. With the birth of “Koha Jonë”, many people began to feel uneasy. And apparently even today they still cannot tolerate the new spirit brought by this newspaper. On this matter, we make it clear to public opinion that “Koha Jonë” is independent and free from any open or hidden pressure. We respect every opposing opinion, but we will never accept becoming anyone’s tool. The constellation of “ZP” was shaken from the moment it learned that the former main party newspaper could no longer have a monopoly in the marketplace of ideas. And from this they tremble, because they think that with slander and fabrications they will silence us. We are not against anyone because of political beliefs. We are against lies, falsification, and the language of hatred. When we speak of real pluralism, free press, and civic debate, they answer us with labels and insinuations. In the article published by “ZP” it is claimed that there allegedly had been quarrels among the leaders of our newspaper. This is false and petty. We have nothing to hide from our readers. Professional disagreements are completely normal in every newsroom, but slander is not journalism. According to them, “Koha Jonë” has become the tribune of a certain group. That is ridiculous. Our newspaper is the tribune of anyone who thinks differently from yesterday’s darkness and who seeks a democratic Albania. It is sad that a newspaper claiming to speak in the name of the people chooses slander and personal attack instead of argument. Instead of debating ideas, they seek to smear names. We will not dwell on this for long. The Albanian reader already knows who writes responsibly and who writes to order. But we felt it necessary to say clearly that “Koha Jonë” is not frightened by any attack and will not abandon its mission. (Continues on page 2)
