Public Order Minister Agron Musaraj and the SHIK chief in Shkodër, Fitim Meta, asked me to have my brother Selami Çelaj wounded in order to justify the tragic killing of Gjovalin Çekini I, Shyqyri Çela, former Democratic Party MP elected on 22 March in the district of Mat, and former head of Public Order in the district of Shkodër immediately after the elections, when I was asked to relinquish my parliamentary mandate, feel it is my duty to address the press to denounce the vile manoeuvres of Public Order Minister Agron Musaraj and the SHIK chief in Shkodër, Fitim Meta, to cover up and justify the killing of Gjovalin Çekini on 14 January in Shkodër. A great deal has been said and written in the press and in public forums about this tragic killing, which shook the Çekini family and public opinion as a whole. Unfortunately, according to the reports and testimony, my brother, Selami Çela, was also implicated in this tragedy. I know that on 14 January Selami was not at the Democratic Alliance party meeting, nor was he in any group involved in disrupting it. While the meeting was taking place at the «Migjeni» Theatre, he was with his friends in a café in the Rus neighbourhood. A Public Order officer found him there and asked Selami to drive him in his car to the «Migjeni» Theatre. Selami agreed, and when he arrived by car outside the theatre, he saw the meeting’s participants coming out. From the published testimony of relatives of the late Gjovalin Çekini, I learned that Selami exchanged retorts and insults with those leaving the theatre. Someone punched him in the jaw, and he began to retreat towards Radio Shkodër. He also drew his revolver, which failed to fire, and continued retreating, facing the late Gjovalin Çekini, who was pleading with him not to shoot. At that moment, Gjovalin Çekini fell and was killed. Everyone believes this sincere testimony from a relative of Gjovalin Çekini who saw the events of 14 January with his own eyes. I believe it too, not simply because we are relieved that my brother was not the killer, but because it comes from the person who feels the greatest grief and was close to the crime. As for our relief, I want to say that my family and I are left with a great sorrow in our hearts that our loved one was dragged, for no reason at all, into a quarrel that had such a tragic outcome. The fact that he had been somewhat drunk, as his friends have told me, does not excuse him. Many people already know what I have said above, but what I am about to say below is known only to a few close friends of mine. I want you all to know it, because it matters (continued on page 2)
