Whenever the border in the southern districts is discussed, people’s deaths are also mentioned. To date, the tragic event associated with this, surely, is the incident on Sunday. As a new day was dawning, this time it was a massacre of an Albanian military unit.
More than one hundred soldiers, aged 18–19 and from different parts of the country, were subjected to this terror, massacre and [?]. According to witnesses and on-site examinations, and following conversations with soldiers from this unit, the chronology of events is as follows.
On Sunday, people wearing masks approached a soldier who was on guard duty. One of them addressed the guard in Albanian: «Where is the weapons depot?» The guard fired a blank shot from his weapon and issued a halt order.
Meanwhile, the second guard, somewhere inside, heard the alarm call and raised the alarm: «Take precautions, they’re Greek soldiers.» The reply from the soldier at the weapons depot was: «I’m a new soldier and I don’t know anything.» According to the soldiers in the unit, there were at least five attackers. After entering the first barracks, they fired their weapons, leaving clear bullet marks on the walls, apparently from an automatic rifle firing large-calibre rounds. The second guard, A. Gjini, a 20-year-old from Fier, came out into the corridor and came face to face with the criminals, who shot him and left him lying on the floor. At that moment, the criminals went up to the second floor, where Officer F. Shehu was coming out. He stepped in front of them and said: «What do you want with the soldiers? Deal with me.» They struck him on the stairs, and the officer [text unclear] entered the rooms of the non-commissioned officers, who, still half asleep, put on only some of their clothes. They ordered them to kneel and searched them for weapons. At the entrance to the other barracks, they fired their weapons, wounding three soldiers. One of the criminals, who spoke with an accent, according to the soldiers, said: «We want Vorio Epirus.»
