A ticking time bomb of 400 tons of dangerous pesticides is threatening the lives of thousands of people and animals in Albania.
A ticking time bomb of 400 tons of dangerous pesticides is threatening the lives of thousands of people and animals in Albania, environmental activists said today. Sent as aid to Albania from Germany in 1992, more than 50 other sites with expired pesticides are located not far from the warehouses of Krujë and Fushë-Krujë. Officials of the ecological organization Greengpeace, after criticizing their arrival in March 1992, called on the Albanian government to take urgent measures. “The entire Albanian territory is a potential risk area,” they said. “Freezing or fire at the depots would have catastrophic consequences for the environment,” noting that they were from 2, allopierët [?] of which had been banned in the European Union or their expiration date had passed. The representatives said they were stored in old buildings ranging from 8 to 5000 m² and could catch fire with catastrophic consequences for land and water. Other merchants from the factory and the market of Toskës and Mali i Krujës had also caused over 80 degrees Celsius in wagons, and could catch fire in the high temperatures of the summer months. Shkodër, a northern center, and the fortress (?) near the 800-year-old city, is at risk. Meanwhile, Milot lies 60 km north of Tirana.
“If nothing is done to remove the pesticides soon, they may contaminate Shkodër and its lake,” said the Greenpeace representative, Lirim Selto, chairman of the Committee for the Protection of Rivers and the environment. He told the newspaper that on the hot days of August, according to the German Environment Minister Klaus Töpfer, that
