Greek Minister of Defence orders an investigation and 20 days’ detention They had stolen 1.5 million drachmas, a watch and a gold cross Three Albanian nationals in Greece fell victim to their own robbers, who were none other than four Greek servicemen taking the undocumented migrants to the Kapshtica border crossing to repatriate them. Greece’s Ministry of Defence has expressed concern about the incident, which is suspected not to be the first or an isolated case. Our correspondent Robert Goro reports from Athens: Today’s local press describes the incident in headlines that end with the word “peculiarity,” and there is an explanation for this: during the three years that Albanian migrants have been in Greece, if one is to go by the press and police reports, there has not been a week without neighbouring-country nationals working illegally here being blamed for a theft or a murder—something for which the press or police themselves have sometimes later held them responsible. Nevertheless, the widespread opinion that undocumented migrants, mainly Albanians, are responsible for all the wrongdoings persists. The following incident runs counter to this view; sources at the Greek Ministry of Defence describe it as follows. A Greek patrol consisting of one sergeant, one seaman and two soldiers arrested three Albanian nationals at the bus station in Kastoria, near the border with Albania, and set off in a service vehicle towards the Kapshtica border crossing to repatriate them. After travelling 20 kilometres, the patrol, at gunpoint, took 1.5 million drachmas, a watch and a gold cross from the detainees, then left them in the middle of the road. The victims went and reported the incident at the nearest police station. The Greek Minister of Defence immediately ordered an investigation and 20 days’ detention for the four servicemen until the matter is clarified. Ministry of Defence sources expressed concern that this is not an isolated case, as there is evidence that the investigation so far has found one of the detainees to be implicated in the network that extorted Albanian migrants.
