Van Der Shtul arrived in Tirana yesterday Although it has only 8 votes in parliament, the Greek Communist Party considers the latest incident involving the distribution of leaflets over the Saranda district a provocation by the Americans, intended to create tensions once again and aggravate relations between Tirana and Athens. Meanwhile, a calm that could serve as an example has been established at the Kakavijë border crossing. The movement of people and vehicles is slight. Unlike a few days earlier, when crowds of Albanian refugees were streaming continuously through the gate connecting Albania with the EC, the day before yesterday, August 22, 1994, Kakavijë had fallen into complete silence. It was precisely on Tuesday, August 22, 1994, that Mr. Van Der Shtul arrived in Tirana. His arrival is connected with his previous visit concerning the reflection of the rights of the Greek minority in Albania. This time, Mr. Van Der Shtul will be briefed at first hand on the continuation of the judicial proceedings against the five Greek minority members of “OMONIA”. Afterwards, the messenger bearing the message on whether the minority’s rights are being respected will be in Athens on Thursday, August 25, 1994. To hear at first hand the comments and views of the Greek government on this issue, which has now become international, a meeting between Greek President Karamanlis and Prime Minister Papandreu will take place at midday today, August 24, 1994. According to political commentators, this will not be a routine meeting of the kind usually held after the summer holidays. Rather, the commentators insist, the judicial proceedings and current Albanian-Greek relations will be discussed exclusively and in detail. It should be noted that this is the first time Greek President Karamanlis has made statements and shown a detailed interest in Albanian-Greek relations. This has drawn particular attention from the mass media and political commentators. According to them, it is still not known whether Prime Minister Papandreu, who will make a statement to journalists, will speak about the concrete measures the Greek government will take in the coming days. This is connected with Mr. Van Der Shtul’s arrival in Athens on Thursday, when he will carry the message from Tirana. As can be seen, high-level meetings are ahead. The tone may rise or fall.
