A softening of tone is evident from the Greek government
As we informed you yesterday, Greek Prime Minister Papandreou, after holding his “regular” meeting with President Karamanlis, met with journalists and political commentators immediately afterward. The Greek prime minister once again made no statements regarding the measures the Greek side has decided to take. Apparently, the prime minister is waiting for Mr. Van der Stoel to arrive in Athens today, carrying the message he is bringing from Tirana. He said only that the Greek government views this issue with determination, cool-headedness and calm. Every step we take, the Greek prime minister continued, is cautious and depends on the positions taken by the Albanian side. For his part, Mr. Van der Stoel has contacted the five members of the Greek minority who are on trial and asked why they had remained silent during his visit and first meeting, regarding the problems and mistreatment they had experienced during the investigative proceedings. The five members of the Greek minority replied that they could not speak at the time because they feared SHIK. Meanwhile, when journalists asked Mr. Venizelos, spokesman for the Greek government, whether there was any talk of closing the border with Albania, he replied that such a measure had not even been considered. However, he said, strict measures had been taken to guard and reinforce the border so that incidents would not occur and there would be no clandestine crossings, as there have been until now.
