According to the court ruling, announced on Monday afternoon, Nik Gjoka, a non-commissioned officer in the former Shkodër DPB, did not take part in the bloody confrontation between the enraged people and the police on the unforgettable April 2, when four people—including Arben Broci—were killed and many others wounded. “On April 2, although many police forces had been mobilized to guard the Shkodër KP, the defendant was not with them, since he had the day off,” military judge Ridvan Shkëmbi stated. But on that tragic morning, the “magnetic” pull of the large crowd gathered—as rarely before—in front of the former district KP drew Gjoka toward the city’s main square. Together with another police officer, according to the court ruling, he remained there for a while and then left. In the first days of May 1991, he left for Greece together with four other police officers, including two who would later become the focus of grave suspicions in the major April 2 trial over the killing of the martyrs of democracy, in search of “a better life”. To escape the anguished life in Albania, they did not discard their uniforms and weapons, but took them with them to convince the Greek authorities that they were “political refugees”. In May of this year, Gjoka, for whom a search had been issued back in 1991, returned to his homeland and was placed under arrest, accused of “misuse of weapons”.
