Tirana A machine gun is stolen from SHIK offices 4 employees sentenced A mysterious robbery in the heart of the National Intelligence Service in Tirana. Unable to identify the perpetrator behind the mystery, four SHIK employees were sentenced, but not the person directly responsible for the theft. The mystery had in fact begun on 30.01.1993, when the safe key went missing from the duty officer’s office at the National Intelligence Service in Tirana. Inside the safe were a Model 56 machine gun and four magazines. The guard service continued, constantly drawing up “reports stating that the safe was in order,” until the end of January 1994, when the machine gun and ammunition were found to be missing from the safe. Seven people had taken turns during this period. Immediately after this was discovered, the Tirana Prosecutor’s Office began its investigation. Bujar Tore, Arben Kalliu, Ndriçim K, Valbona Gjori, Shpresa Dobroniku, Fatmir Grabova and Alketa Limani faced charges of “breaching guard-service regulations.” But apart from Ndriçim K., who was dismissed, the other six were investigated without being deprived of their right to continue working at SHIK. After 10 months of investigations and several court hearings, the Tirana Military Court sentenced four of them—Shpresa Dobronikun, Valbona Gjoçin, Ndriçim K. and Fatmir Grabovën—to four months in prison each, suspended for one year. In recent days, the Albanian police seized nearly 1 million liters of fuel in northern Albania, destined to be illegally transported to Yugoslavia via Lake Shkodër, which is shared by Albania and Montenegro. A statement from the Albanian Ministry of Internal Affairs announced on Saturday that 22 truck drivers transporting 880,000 liters of fuel had been arrested in the Shkodër district. The shipment was awaiting transport by boat to the Montenegrin market across the lake. Intensive trafficking is taking place between Albania and Yugoslavia, in violation of the fuel embargo imposed against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The police operation was carried out after the Albanian government adopted a decision to take additional measures to stop this trafficking. At the end of November, the Albanian police had arrested 10 Albanian citizens for fuel smuggling toward Montenegro. It had seized 128,000 liters of diesel. It had also stopped a 37-year-old Albanian in the village of Samrisht, very close to the border with Montenegro, who, equipped with false documents, was attempting to transport 58,000 liters of diesel across the border.
