But the case file on Baftjar Daci, who committed the barbaric act on a night in May this year, has now reached the Tirana Court. The defendant’s claims of innocence have arrived with it; he did not admit the charge during the investigation, while experts confirmed that clear signs of sexual violence he had inflicted were visible on the child’s body. The unusual story began on the evening of May 9, when the 66-year-old Gay was wandering around the capital’s railway station looking for shelter for the night. There, quite by chance, he saw a child wandering around just like him. And the original idea came to him immediately. He managed, without any particular effort—the child was from Fierz[a?], had just returned from Greece, where he had gone to work, and appeared to have empty pockets—to persuade him to sleep together in a train carriage. But later the child would realize that the old man was a real sexual “monster”: in the carriage where they had decided to sleep, although he failed to persuade the child to make love with him willingly by tempting him with money, he used force. The child’s attempts to resist his fury were futile. The child was thus subjected to a horrific sexual assault, from which he emerged bleeding and battered. He immediately sought help from the railway station guard, and the following day told the police about that night of horror. Meanwhile, Gay desperately tried to sever his ties with the crime, but unfortunately for him, his brutality had left visible marks on the victim’s fragile body. Not only that, but during the investigation the defendant claimed that “his genitals did not function,” while the experts’ findings confirmed that the marks found on the child’s body had been caused precisely by the “monster.” It is not yet known whether the terrifying old Gay has an extensive sexual history involving other cases of violence, apart from the fact that he has been divorced several times. The Greek Parliament Speaker asks his Albanian counterpart to intervene for the release of the five The Speaker of the Greek Parliament, Apostolos Kaklamanis, asked his Albanian counterpart, Pjetër Arbnori, to intervene and seek the release from prison by Christmas of a Greek minority activist sentenced on Saturday, according to the official Greek news agency ANA. Kaklamanis made this request after being unable to accept on Friday Arbnori’s invitation to travel to Tirana next week to attend the meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly on Black Sea Economic Cooperation, because of his “packed schedule.” “I trust in your intervention so that my fellow citizens may be released soon, and be able to celebrate Christmas, like all Christians,” Kaklamanis notes in a letter addressed to his Albanian counterpart. He also calls on Albania to dispel the “negative climate” that exists between the two countries by avoiding “efforts [and] specific measures.” Greek-Albanian relations have been in crisis since the imprisonment this autumn of five Greek minority activists, convicted of “spying on behalf of Athens.” Greece has made the resumption of dialogue conditional on their release.
