Last night, student demonstration in Tirana
-Students from the Faculties of Construction, Medicine and Physical Education protested against the lack of electricity and bread
Deputy editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Koha jonë”, Martin Leka, forcibly detained. Minister of the Interior denounced the detention in Skënderbej Square
-Yesterday from around 19:30 until 21:36, students from the above-mentioned faculties of Tirana, as well as many citizens, gathered en masse at Qyteti Studenti, where they protested the lack of bread and electricity. Our correspondent at Qyteti Studenti, Sokol Balla, reports that the gathering began after a speech by the former prime minister and candidate of the Socialist Party of Greece, Andreas Papandreu, who lives near Qyteti Studenti. The citizens were holding lit candles in their hands, with slogans such as “We want electricity, bread”, “The PD is stripping this country bare, it has killed all of Albania”, etc. The protest continued along Elbasanit Street, where the police tried to disperse the crowd by force, and also in Skënderbej Square, but without success. The students and citizens headed toward Dajti Bridge and stood in front of the police cars, which were holding the detainees. To help them, other citizens sat down beside them. During the noise of the stun grenades and police actions on Durrësit Street, 7 citizens and one student were injured, and 50 people were arrested. Among them was our correspondent at Qyteti Studenti, Sokol Balla. Later all the detainees, except for the student, were released at 22:00. After the report at 21:36–21:40 to the newspaper’s editorial office, its editor, Martin Leka, as soon as he left for the train station to make some phone calls, he was stopped by the police. After about 3.7 km on foot, at 23:37 he was taken to the police station, where a large police force was deployed and the SHIK intervened to confront the students with the latest equipment. The next day the police explained that Martin Leka was a “misunderstanding” and that his release had been carried out following an order from the Minister of the Interior.
