Elbasan Law Enforcement at the Sunday Market Alarm prompted by fears of protests Turkeys declared unwelcome in the city Namazgjaja, Elbasan’s favorite square for trading, was to draw more people than ever to its grounds last Sunday. Perhaps because it was the last Sunday of buying and selling for this year, both sellers and buyers had gathered there out of a sense of mutual obligation, regardless of the heavy rain that fell without stopping. The New Year celebration, which falls on the Sunday of this week, further accounts for this crowd of townspeople and villagers alike. But what is worth noting is that the “density” of those present was greatly increased by the victims of the New Year’s Eve feast, the turkeys. Nevertheless, we can say that the presence of these martyr birds was not the cause of the commotion. The alarm among the law-enforcement forces, the long, uninterrupted wailing of police-car sirens, and the various radio transmission codes were prompted in particular by the exceptionally large gathering. Concern that those present on this boulevard might launch a spontaneous strike as a sign of protest against the lack of electricity led to the mobilization of the security forces. The chief official of the Police Commissariat was also involved in this “investigation operation,” but this “blitz” action ended in a ridiculous way. After making sure that there was no deliberate attempt behind this unsuspecting gathering, the clearing-out police launched an attack on the turkeys, which they considered unwelcome on this boulevard’s promenade. These innocent, red-crested birds, together with their owners, were driven from the market square without causing any incident. At the end of this police mission, besides the bitter taste left by the clearances, wet turkey feathers remained in the square, along with the occasional dropping from these birds.
