Parliamentary proceedings are blocked

For several hours yesterday afternoon, MPs waited in vain for the first session of the second parliamentary term to begin. The leadership failed to reach consensus on the agenda. Shaqir Vukaj, Nanik Dode and Skënder Gjinushi insisted that proceedings should begin with summoning Prime Minister Meksi to explain the incident in which the Court of Cassation was surrounded by police. On the other hand, Pjetër Arbnori, Tomor Malasi and Ali Spahia voted against this interpellation, thus blocking the opening of the first sitting of Parliament. “A coup within the constitutional system” “We must do everything so that this tower is not taken over by Berisha’s political power” page 2

Two of the eight are accused of the Peshkëpi massacre

After statements by members of MAVI They are the Greek citizens Jorgos Anastasulis and Apostolos Karvelas, respectively former members of the Greek armed forces and police Six months after the arrest of seven people near the Greek-Albanian border, who according to the competent authorities were returning from a failed attempt to attack an Albanian military unit, it seems that the investigation into the perpetrators of the Peshkëpi massacre of 10 April 1994 has now taken a good turn. After a marathon hearing of testimonies, the prosecutor’s investigator in the case notified the two Greek citizens, former army officer Jorgos Anastasulis and former police officer Apostolos Karvelas, of pre-trial detention on charges of participating in the attack against the training center for Albanian recruits in Peshkëpi. In the relevant decision, taken after a long meeting, investigator Panadhehoru and prosecutor Psarakis emphasize about the two defendants: “They are particularly dangerous and there is evidence that, if released, they could commit unlawful acts again.” After the Albanian citizen, Angjello Koka[?]veshi, who had been released on bail a few weeks earlier, the investigator also cleared five other Albanian citizens of suspicion of involvement in the Peshkëpi massacre: Fredi Beleri, Mario Kutula, Harallamb Jorgo Papa and Jorgo Kristo, on the grounds that “the investigations did not reveal facts that could incriminate them.” While they were released without any conditions from this charge, they continue to be held in pre-trial detention for the “Kalashnikov” weapons found on them during the arrest, as well as from the searches carried out in those days in Athens. The procedure for carrying out the additional statements began tensely as soon as the defendants were brought before the investigator. Around 20 supporters of the arrested men had gathered in the courtyard of the investigative office and were shouting slogans such as: “Let us enter Albania with tanks” or “Freedom and justice for the Vorio-Epirotes”. During questioning, the defendant Jorgo Anastasulis protested in a very original way against the investigator’s remark that his alibi for 10 April was unconvincing and that the defendant’s mother could be arrested for false testimony. Anastasulis grabbed a glass of water and smashed it forcefully on the floor, then began banging his head against the wall, which caused the questioning to be interrupted. The latest developments seem to confirm the rumors, which a few days ago said that the review of the investigation had brought to light new facts proving the involvement of the two Greek citizens in the Peshkëpi massacre. The intensification of legal procedures after Prime Minister Andreas Papandreu’s public warning to examine the case more harshly reinforces the conviction that even a minimal amount of light will be shed on the aggressive activity of certain nationalist circles acting through executors such as the MAVI organization, and which have greatly darkened the future of Greek-Albanian relations.
