All roads lead to Rome

Berisha in Italy. The Treaty of Friendship is signed Berisha — The man who invests other people’s investments When, three days ago, he said that the election campaign in Albania still had time before it could begin, Berisha was being unusually candid. That is because the election campaign he started in America and is continuing in Europe, he still has not decided to bring to Albania. His recent visits to Brussels, Rome and then Bonn seem to have the ultimate goal of attracting investments in the final year of the President’s party mandate. Berisha rightly believes that these maneuvers will make his next election campaign easier and at the same time they will blow up, as much as possible, the blunders in domestic politics. This latest tour across Europe also does not depart from the now familiar scheme of the Albanian president. During these four years he has narrowed the space for political opponents and has claimed to expand the economic space for Albanian citizens. But after the end of the American tour, which he used in favor of political interests, Berisha began the European tour, which he is using in favor of economic interests. For the Albanian president, the map of interests has long been divided into two parts: America and Europe. From the first he seeks political support and from the second financial support. The most visible difference is that in America he goes as chairman of the PD, while in Europe as President of Albania. Berisha-Scalfaro during yesterday’s meeting photo Reuters page 3

The judges signed the same sentence that only a few days earlier had also been requested by the prosecutor in this case. The trial concluded yesterday in the Tirana Court represents the second case in which foreign citizens are tried for trafficking heroin. “Mustafa Ataseven is declared guilty of the criminal offense of possession and sale of drugs and I request that he be sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment.” This is the verdict announced yesterday by judge Arjan Balliu in the final hearing against the Turkish citizen. The event took place in early February of last year near the place called “Zogu i zi” on the outskirts of the capital. Ataseven, the 27-year-old merchant by profession, fell into the trap of the officers of our special anti-drug units at the moment he was about to exchange 3 kg of heroin for 60,000 dollars. At no point had he admitted committing the offense of which he was accused. Yesterday the court of first instance concluded. According to confirmation from his lawyer, Mr. Kujtim Puto, the Turk is obliged to await the appeal hearing in the second instance, which will be filed within the legal deadline. A. P.
