Tirana Special Reinvestigation into the 2 April Massacre Former police officer arrested 3 days ago accused of murder The arrest on Wednesday morning of a former police officer wanted in connection with the 2 April ’92 massacre has prompted the reopening of another case file. And, just as more than two years ago, a special team of investigators has once again been set up; they are working to determine the extent of his involvement in the unforgettable events of 2 April, when four young people were killed during a confrontation between citizens of Shkodër and the police. The initial charges against former police officer Pal Mika are serious: “murder and misuse of firearms.” The highly confidential investigations, which began immediately after Mika was arrested at his home in the village of Bogë, in Malësia e Madhe, have once again focused on the tragic day of 2 April. After the massacre, Mika left for Greece together with four other police officers. He took his uniform and personal weapon with him. After staying in the neighboring country, the former police officer returned to Albania, where he was arrested by law-enforcement forces. Immediately after his arrest, a special team of investigators was formed, comprising the well-known investigators Petrit Fusha and Vaskë Simoni—the same men who had investigated the case two years earlier. With Mika’s arrest, the number of police officers arrested by the police reaches three; they had been wanted following the start of the current 2 April trial. The former police officer arrested second, Nik Gjoja, who was sentenced to 8 months in prison by the Tirana Military Court on 14 November last year, had initially been charged, like Pal Mika, with “murder and misuse of firearms.” But later the first charge was dropped, as he was not considered to have been involved in the killings. Yesterday morning, at around 7, a serious railway accident occurred on the Durrës–Tirana railway line, near Kamzë. The first train departing from Durrës collided with a truck bearing a Durrës license plate, pushing it about 20 meters. “It’s a miracle,” those present said, “that both injured people, the truck’s drivers, are alive.” We have been informed by Durrës Hospital that both were injured, mainly in the head, and that the more seriously injured person was taken to the hospital in Tirana.
