Good news from Madrid! That is all they were able to confirm yesterday from a source concerning the meeting of the World Inter-Parliamentary Union, which finally concluded yesterday in the Spanish capital. The source had been in contact with one of the members of the Albanian delegation there. As is known, a delegation from Albania also took part in the meeting, consisting of the only one among 131 deputies who voted against the resolution on Nano last year, Mr. Ali Spahija, and the Socialist Party deputy chairman, Mr. Luan Hajdaraga. But Nano’s lawyer, Mr. Sanxhaku, also took part in the Albanian delegation. He had been urgently summoned there by the Union authorities, and in this context his “vote” may perhaps have outweighed the votes of the two deputies. It is learned from Madrid that the Nano case was discussed the day before yesterday and yesterday in the Union Committee, and that the discussion was in Nano’s favor. The final vote was held yesterday, but we were unable to learn its result. Nevertheless, preliminary reports say that this vote, too, was in Nano’s favor, and concerned procedural violations during his arrest and trial, as well as the lack of evidence implicating Nano in the guilt for which he was accused and convicted. This was also the substance of yesterday’s discussion and vote in Madrid. You will read more about the further developments of the Madrid meeting in the next issue, while the delegation is expected to return to Albania this afternoon. Thus, yet another public statement in favor of the Socialist Party chairman has recently been added to the many objections and protests over the Nano case. As can be seen, the bells for Nano and his release continue to ring once again in Europe and Albania. Between Madrid and Bënça, Socialist leader Nano remains confined. Between them stand President Berisha and his party. They hear only the clanking of the Bënça handcuffs fastened around the hands of the Socialist leader. As can be seen, Berisha and the DP want to hear the symphony of this “music” right up until the new elections. M.L.
