Prosecutor: “They received lenient sentences” TIRANA/The long saga of trials involving 13 former police officers at Tirana prison, who helped 20 convicted prisoners regain their freedom ahead of time, has reached the Court of Appeal. This is a protest by military prosecutor Petrit Bici, already filed with the capital’s court, through which he has requested a review of the first-instance court’s sentences, describing them as “lenient and unsupported by evidence and law.” At the end of April this year, the military judges had sentenced all the officers to a total of 8 years and 9 months. Bici, meanwhile, had sought sentences four times longer for them. But although no severe sentence was handed down to the former officers (3 of them were declared not guilty), the latter have nevertheless not regained their jobs. The authorities of Unit 313 did not wait for the trial to conclude and replaced them with other employees. In any case, until the Court of Appeal issues another ruling, the 9 former officers serving their sentences where they had also worked, as well as the other 3 who were acquitted, will have to live through these days caught between anxiety and hope.
