Surprise operation to stop cross-border smuggling Abuse and resistance by villagers in the border areas Shkodër - Malësi e Madhe The attack launched on Saturday along the border line at Lake Shkodër, on the Buna River, and at the land border in Muriçan, in the municipality of Oblikë, came as a surprise to many residents of the border areas of the Shkodër and Malësi e Madhe districts. The result of this offensive by special forces from Tirana, equipped with numerous vehicles and even a helicopter, was the seizure of goods worth considerable sums, including fuel, three tankers on the lakeshore, around 150 tons of flour, as well as the vehicles used to transport them. Another result of this operation was the violence used by the specialist forces that had arrived from Tirana, which included the mistreatment of villagers in the border areas who engage in smuggling to make a living. It is reported that in the village of Muriçan, in the municipality of Oblikë, the situation went as far as a confrontation between local villagers and the special forces. As a result, there are many injured. According to residents of these villages, the seizures were made from villagers who conduct small-scale cross-border trade, and the confiscated goods threaten their economic situation. Strangely, the smuggling bosses were not transporting goods across the border that day. This leads to the suspicion that they had been informed about the police operation. Several sources report that the conflict has intensified between residents of the areas concerned and the special forces carrying out patrols. Bursts of automatic gunfire have also been heard on Lake Shkodër, directed against the police forces. It seems that with this operation the Albanian government is seeking to show international organizations that the embargo is being respected.
