Yesterday morning, throughout the city of Vlorë, the situation was calm. It seems that on Thursday, the Vlorë police entered into talks with citizens to calm the tense situation. Only around 8:30 p.m., a large group of angry women, helped by men, headed toward the crowd in the city of Vlorë where the police were also stationed. There, clashes and shoving began between the police and the citizens of Vlorë. At that moment, rapid intervention forces and special units arrived there to neutralize the situation. According to official sources, the number of citizens arrested reaches up to 35.
Apparently, the whole event was caused by the slander published by the press that two children from Vlorë had been kidnapped by unknown persons. In fact, the newspaper "Koha Jonë" had written that the children had been sent to Italy. This angered the children and the citizens of Vlorë. Based on the complaint made by the parents of the two children, the police and the prosecutor's office insisted on asking the press for help in not publishing the children's names. According to them, the decision was taken to avoid uncontrolled reactions and political consequences. However, more and more journalists from Tirana were asking about the two missing children every hour, thus fueling the reactions of the citizens.
According to the press office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the 35 detained persons are clandestine smugglers. Also yesterday evening this ministry officially declared that there had been no kidnapping of children. The children reported as kidnapped had left of their own will for Italy. According to this office, the instigators of the unrest were precisely people who organize illegal trafficking by speedboats to Italy. As the ministry claims, these groups took advantage of the panic to stand up to the police.
On the other hand, in last night's events, a group of citizens also expressed their anger toward the press. Some of them accused the newspapers of fueling the unrest with hasty articles. Police representatives warned that legal measures would be taken against publications that spread unconfirmed news. For this reason, the note at the top of the page also reads: "Police denies and threatens the press".
