Albanian diplomacy is seeking to take further steps towards integration with neighbouring countries. Foreign Minister Serreqi has asked the Government to approve the opening of six new customs posts—three along the border with Greece and three more with Montenegro. The project is scheduled to be reviewed at Monday’s Government meeting. “The large movement of goods and people across the Albanian-Greek border,” Serreqi writes in the memorandum sent to the Government, “makes it reasonable to request an expansion of the border customs area, which would facilitate these movements.” Greece is currently Albania’s second-largest trading partner, after Italy, but trade is conducted through just two border customs posts: Kakavijë (Gjirokastër) and Kapshticë (Korçë). As for the customs posts with Montenegro, the Foreign Minister’s memorandum cites the repeated requests of Albanians living in this former Yugoslav republic to travel more freely to Albania. Until now, only Hani i Hotit and Bajza have operated for the movement of people along this border as well. Because of the conditions imposed to comply with the embargo against Serbia and Montenegro, the passage of any kind of goods through these posts has been completely prohibited. The Foreign Ministry’s project does not, however, specify where these customs posts would be opened. This will certainly take time, not least because the posts will need to be equipped with staff and technical facilities. But if the Government approves the project, it would provide another opportunity for the free movement of goods and people. GJERGJ PILIKA

At Kapshticë, death is being “cleared through customs.” These are the bodies of two clandestine migrants, already brought back, while the third has been reported and is expected to arrive at the customs post. According to official accounts, the unfortunate Albanians were involved in accidents in Greece. For 25-year-old Dritan Oranlli, from the village of Damjanicë in the Korçë district, death came during a pursuit by Greek soldiers of a group of clandestine migrants. Bad luck befell Oranlli, who fell into a ravine and injured his spine. News of the accident reached his family about a month ago, and it was also reported that D.O. had been taken to hospital. In fact, according to the information available, the 25-year-old received treatment during this period, but the doctors were unable to save his life. On the 21st (vershor, Oranlli was handed over to the customs authorities in a coffin. A day later, at around 20:00, the body of 24-year-old Artan Çollaku from the city of Bilisht was brought out. A bicycle ride proved tragic for Çollaku. In the area known as Aspropiërgo, the 24-year-old was run over by a car. Meanwhile, yesterday, on the 23rd, according to official information, the body of a third victim was returned; this person had also been involved in an accident. Preliminary information indicates that the victim was from Cërrik. The blacklist does not end there. According to official sources, there are also two injured people who will arrive at the border soon. Identification and completion of the formalities for the latter now fall to the Devoll police station, whose officials have taken the necessary measures to make this painful passage at least a little easier.
