In a letter addressed to the Minister of Justice, in which they request a meeting with representatives of the ministry, the prisoners denounce that the Albanian citizen Ali Kopliku, who is serving his sentence in the island’s prison, was beaten in an inhumane manner by the guards. In despair, his mind clouded by unbearable pain, he tried twice to kill himself and, covered in blood, was taken to the hospital in Corfu. On Friday, the prosecutor of Corfu placed the case file in the archives; it makes no mention whatsoever of mistreatment, but only of attempted suicides. Taking this as their cue, the prisoners have appealed to the prosecutor of the Corfu court and are asking him to reopen Ali Kopliku’s case file and punish all those who carried out and covered up this “monstrous” act, as their request explicitly states. They also emphasize that there are witnesses who wish to testify before the court regarding the incident. Around 2,000 Albanian citizens are serving sentences in Greek prisons for various offenses, most of them having ended up in prison because they could not afford to hire defense lawyers.
