Cameras at polling stations

FIER - A camera for every polling station. This is the system that the PS will use in Fier to document violations that may occur during the elections. This fact was made known by a reliable source from the PS leadership. Alongside the candidates for MPs, councilors, mayors, and the district, the source states that the people who will take part in securing and monitoring the polling stations are also being appointed. "Since such a system is expensive, - the source continues - the socialists have asked the support of sympathizers to help raise funds for the purchase of cameras. Asked about this fact, an official from the PS branch in Fier did not deny it, but refused to comment. ZAMIR ALUSHI

Papandreou resigns

Andreas Papandreou taking office as Greece's new prime minister on 12 October 1993. photo Reuters Late yesterday evening, the resignation of the PASOK chairman and Prime Minister of Greece, Andreas Papandreou, was announced. With this act, he brings to an end his long political career, as well as the continuous setbacks that would have been very difficult for any Western politician to face. The reason for his resignation was his serious health condition. For weeks he had been hospitalized with pneumonia. The doctors at the Onassis clinic had long since announced that recovery of his health and return to office were impossible. The PASOK Secretary General, Kostas Skandalidis, said that Papandreou resigned because of his deteriorating health condition. The 76-year-old charismatic leader experienced major setbacks. During his political career he was imprisoned three times. In 1981 he was accused of corruption, a case that would be clarified in 1992, when he would be declared innocent. In October 1993, in the parliamentary general elections, PASOK won an overwhelming majority in Parliament, and Papandreou would be elected prime minister for the third time. He appointed his wife to the post of cabinet chief, a move that caused him no small amount of trouble. Papandreou is one of Greece's most prominent figures. Through his shrewd policy he integrated the country into all the European institutions. Papandreou is the architect of the new post-World War II Greece. Since 1963, when he renounced US citizenship, he has been elected as a member of the Greek parliament. "Papandreou took a very courageous political step, once again showing that he is a great politician," said Jhohanopulos, one of the main leaders of PASOK, who since 20 November has replaced him as head of government, immediately after Papandreou's resignation. Meanwhile, PASOK Secretary General Skandalidis declared: "With Papandreou, the cycle of the great Greek leaders of the post-military war period comes to an end." And Papandreou's son, the Greek Minister of Education, Giorgos Papandreou, climbing the steps of the Onassis clinic, commented on Papandreou's political kin in a highly emotional way before the television cameras: "I am very moved. For me, this day is called Andreas Papandreou." J.BABARAMO
