The journalist was mistreated for two hours straight by the Saranda chief of police himself, and was then released after the police confiscated his notebook. As soon as he entered the chief of police’s office, he had to endure a torrent of insults, punches to the face and kicks all over his body. “Why are you trying to discredit the police’s work?” the police chief threatened him. “You haven’t written a single article about the good work of the police; you’ve only smeared us,” he said, grabbing the journalist by the hair and dragging him along the floor. The brutal beating lasted more than two hours. At 16:30 Fatos Veliu emerged from the station offices with his face covered in blood and marks of violence all over his body. ILIR BABARAMO The violence inflicted on Friday on “KJ” journalist Fatos Veliu, who covers Saranda, is a shameful act that discredits not only the police but also the Albanian state. When a police officer can bring himself to strike a journalist, no ordinary citizen has reason to feel safe. The many cases of this kind, and the fact that no police officer is being punished, show that violence against the press is becoming acceptable. Today, any police officer not only dares to strike a journalist but may even boast about it. This conflict, which is now becoming a phenomenon, is the greatest discrimination a state can inflict on its own citizens, especially on members of the press. The physical violence by police officers against journalists is more than a violation of freedom of speech and of the free press; it is an assault on that part of a state which is respected throughout the world today. In light of the frequent cases of its journalists being mistreated, the “KJ” editorial staff has decided to appeal to the Prosecutor General’s Office and seek criminal prosecution of the chief of police for the Saranda district.
