The entire “Koha Jonë” newsroom spent last night in police custody

Dozens of police forces surround the newspaper offices Such events have happened only in Chile! TIRANË - An unprecedented event in the history of the Albanian press took place last night. More than 33 full-time journalists of Koha Jonë, other employees of the newsroom, as well as the duty police officer, ended up at Police Station No. 2 in Tiranë. More than 50 police officers called urgently and directed by our heavily policed force in a peaceful and democratic country like Albania, ordered to carry out the prosecutor’s and secret police’s instructions, blocked all the newspaper’s offices as well as the building where the “Koha Jonë” newsroom is located. It was enough that the journalists of this newspaper had exceeded the deadline for evacuation from that office, on the claim that the newsroom had not yet completed the relevant documents. After that, the police action became even stronger. We were asked to transport all the staff of this newspaper to the police station, where this article is still being written today. The police have brought all the newspaper staff inside their doors, as in an ambush. The rest of the newsroom, which was not there yesterday, continues to distribute today’s issue. Until yesterday they were in better condition than us. a place like this, if they had any connection to being impartial, and if they were in the situation we are going through ourselves, they would write much more than this. People from Tiranë know that 26 February 1914 was the day when Ahmet Zogu definitively emerged on the scene in Shëngjin, first as Albania’s satrap and later as monarch. In contrast to this, last night we were spending the second night in the newspaper offices, after seeing that the police forces had broken down the doors with metal tools and had entered by force, seizing our work equipment, typewriters and computers. Once again we make it known that everything happening to this newspaper is political revenge on the part of the government for its critical and independent publications. We are neither thieves nor murderers to spend the night accompanied by police and to be treated in a manner unworthy of a democratic state. This happens only in Chile or in some similar dictatorship. The events of these days, especially last night, show that press freedom is being directly attacked. [partially illegible text?]

Determined to defend press freedom

After the detention of the “Koha Jonë” staff Determined to defend press freedom Statement by the president of the Association of Professional Journalists The president of the Association of Professional Journalists of Albania, Ferdinand Xhaferraj, in a statement for “Koha Jonë”, described what happened to “Koha Jonë” as an extremely alarming phenomenon, stressing that such actions represent unacceptable pressure on the independent press. Commenting on the recent events, he stated that the public has drawn an inevitable connection between the police movements and the decision to evacuate the newspaper, considering this a clear sign of a political backstage. According to him, although in the absence of an official reaction from the relevant authorities it is difficult to say with complete certainty, the manner of action and the climate created lead one to this conclusion. Europe and the USA are with us.
