On 26 February of this year, the newspaper “Koha Jonë” newsroom was surrounded by police, with around 120 police officers taking part, all of them armed. That same night, 33 journalists from “Koha Jonë” were taken to the offices of Police Station No. 2 in Tirana, and my home was searched at 02:00, while I was being held at the police offices. During the search, the police and SHIK forces also took 20 film cassettes that were my property and contained footage from my family life. They also took the cassettes I had filmed during the trial of journalists Aleksandër Frangaj and Martin Leka in February–May 1994, which I had kept with great care, since they were part of the Berishian government’s campaign against the independent “Koha Jonë”. All of these, together with some other personal belongings, were kept at the offices of Police Station No. 2 and then ended up in the office of Tirana prosecutor Kostaq Beluri. Although it took a long time, my family cassettes were returned to me after being examined one by one. But their most shameful act was that they erased all my cassettes, returning them to me merely for the inventory. What gives these criminals against individual liberty the right to erase my family things? Was my deceased grandmother, filmed during her funeral ceremony, so frightening? Are my two children, aged four and one, so dangerous to this government that they had to be erased from the cassettes? Were the four cassettes recording the entire trial of journalists Aleksandër Frangaj and Martin Leka so threatening? Were they so afraid of the cassette showing my elderly father?! Why was all this done to me? Why did it have to go so far as to interfere[?] even with the things a person holds dear? This is a crime against the private life of a person who had decided to build his life without compromise with Berisha’s illegitimate government. All this was done by elements acting on direct orders from Bashkim Gazidede, head of SHIK. It is true that the police seizure report lists the name of a judicial police officer, Astrit Veshaj, but he is not the perpetrator of this uncivilized and shameful act. He merely signed. Others searched the cassettes; others erased them. And these are the same offices on the third floor of this police station where the “Dita Informacion” journalist Bardhok Lala was beaten to death. It is the same name, the same person, who will one day go to trial to answer for his own misdeeds as well. NIKOLLË LESI
