USA: Constitution and elections
Wirth: Parliamentary elections would be a logical outcome
Statement from the State Department after the Tirana visit supported in Washington
The propaganda of the Albanian state resembles a statement. Throughout the week, statements by senior Albanian officials have been used concerning the UN General Assembly, at the upcoming session in Washington where President Sali Berisha is visiting. The direct statements of the American officials whom the Albanian President will meet are also not left unmentioned. Thus yesterday the bulletin of the official Albanian agency referred to a statement by the spokesman of the U.S. State Department, Nik Burns, regarding the Wirth-Berisha meeting in the U.S., mainly about the political climate in the country. Besides Mr Burns, as we said, this statement was also quoted as having been made by the spokesman of the State Department, and it has now spread far and wide. Such a report, without directly mentioning its source, constitutes or does not constitute a subtle abuse of the facts. It is very clear that the U.S. once again underlines through important figures that the opposition must remain calm and that the elections of 26 May are only days away, for those to understand it. But the statement from Tirana is untrue, referring to the meeting, which cited issues as well as the position of the U.S. State Department concerning the expression of the current crisis for the democratic and civil climate, and would have been made directly by the spokesman's bulletin. Tirana delayed, the spokesman for Sali Berisha gave statements that the new American government is sending signals for stability. On this occasion, you can read the text on the period of the escalating crisis in the country exactly as it was distributed by the information section of the U.S. State Department on 27 September, directly and in the original. According to this text, the essence of the Wirth-Berisha meeting, concerning the meeting with the spokesman of the American State Department on the Albanian state and policy, is that the political climate in the country continues to be polarized and that the U.S. has expressed support for early parliamentary elections, under conditions of reforms and change. This was either a finding or a recommendation, it made both possible. This fact raises the question of when there may be no need in the case of the crisis. If the U.S. sees the political future in the country through parliamentary elections and not through prolonging this institutional issue, then it is clear that the American bulletin says the current parliament may have lost the confidence to govern. In an interview for the Italian television public yesterday, Democratic Party MP Tritan Shehu said that opposition parliamentarians should decide as has been decided and as their electorate should also do. Wirth-Berisha, according to this source, led with the meeting a discussion on the possibility of solutions without tension and without violence, as a result of the decision of the parliament of the year.
