Neighborhood, not outward-looking
The conflict in the foreground of relations with neighboring countries, after the government's arrival the country came out briefly, but the change in foreign political stance also appears in the orientation the government had in handling the conflict dossier with Greece. It is now seen as careless concessions in relations with Athens by Sali Berisha and a political experiment, but the conclusions about foreign policy present a number of dilemmas, making the Albanian question unclear. I give more dilemmas: will Albanians continue disorganized, etc. I give more dilemmas: the country must deal with its neighbors, for the problems in the Balkans.
Today in relations with neighboring countries, a harsh dictate is exercised in some border areas; it is present that, in the settlement of fear, an old policy in relations is now being encouraged. Official policy is now following a line of undertaking against the country with Athens, but not in a clear manner.
If this government needs an agreement on Greece's role, then it is obliged to give open and internal clarifications. The attitude toward Greek circles and brief, or presents the country in relations with its neighbors.
Likewise, with the building of good neighborliness, a climate of distrust has been shown by the government repeating itself. This goes against the European spirit and if Albania is concentrating numerous allegations toward Greece at another moment, this is contrary to European standards.
There have been serious shortcomings in Albanian policy. Even on the issue of the maritime border, there is a stance that runs counter to law and diplomatic tradition. We must be careful not to turn neighborly relations into political conflict.
The current agreements do not directly lead to shared calm and beyond irresponsibilities. In relations with Macedonia there have been unnecessary missteps. Now with the new government a step forward has been made, but there is still room for full adjustment.
Macedonia and the issue of its name must be handled with maturity. In no case should Albania take on the role of intermediary without having the proper strength. Our policy must defend the interests of Albanians there, but without harming peace in the region.
In the end, it must be said that Albania's foreign policy needs a more consistent, less emotional, and more institutional doctrine.
