Irredeemable Berisha

Despite the speculation, the PD elected Sali Berisha as its chairman, confirming once again that in Albania a party leader — the one elected first — is replaced only when he dies. But that is only one side of the coin. The other side is the timing of Berisha’s election. This is an extremely delicate moment, when the West has conditioned aid to Albania on an unequivocal demand: We will help you only if there is a spirit of cooperation between the government and the opposition! But the fact that the face of the PD did not change at its fourth congress is a clear warning that there will be no cooperation between Nano and Berisha. So far Fatos Nano has listened to the West. The invitation he extended to Berisha to go together to Rome was made in the very spirit of cooperation. Along this line Nano can do much more, but everything comes from regular government-opposition cooperation. Berisha’s refusal of the Rome invitation, his declaration that the last elections were irregular, the boycott of Parliament, the use of the Hajdari-Mazreku incident to stage street protests, clearly show that Berisha wants neither cooperation nor shared responsibility with Nano. In essence, as irredeemable as ever, he is aiming to leave Albania without aid and thus to topple Nano, not only from the state pyramid, but also from the PS pyramid. If this kind of politics is played out to the end, it will deepen our chaos and misery, so Nano must act quickly. He must warn the West that cooperation is possible only when you have a serious partner and ask that his position and Berisha’s be analyzed. It would be madness to discriminate against and leave in misery a people simply because the opposition leader is not being persuaded! If Berisha has complaints about the government’s conduct, let him say so openly, in a documented way, and if Nano has mistreated the opposition, that should be corrected. But accusations such as “face of the dead,” “communists,” “murderers,” “thieves,” etc., express not only the death of cooperation, but also the destruction of the opposition itself. Therefore, at this moment of his election, Berisha must listen and reflect. Otherwise, the PD will be the sole catalyst for deepening our crisis. This latter must be prevented by the West as soon as possible. Yesterday’s decisions of the Brussels Conference are a very good signal for all Albanians. TEODOR KEKO
