By Ben Blushi Although it was held on the seashore, the Crete Summit was unable to dampen the gunpowder within Balkan power. Fatos Nano said that although the gunpowder is there, it has been deactivated and has lost its smell, but it is not known whether the other eight members of the Crete table share the same view. Milošević, naturally, would be the first to offer a fuse to Balkan gunpowder as soon as Kosovo was threatened. The 55-year-old communist who led the war in Bosnia did not react at all with the dark humor of Fatos Nano, who said that Milošević is so young that, after making war, he can also make peace. Slobo, by contrast, did not forget to speak about the strength of the Balkan armies, which, in his view, should resolve the region’s internal problems themselves, without foreign armies getting involved—by which he meant NATO. Following this gunpowder logic, the Yugoslav president insisted that an entire paragraph be removed from the final resolution, according to which the Balkan states recognize the Alliance’s peacekeeping role in Europe. His fear was now pathological: that, as in Bosnia, Western armies might tear away a piece of territory. Milošević seems not to fear the other Balkan armies very much, including Albania’s. But farther south in the Balkans, it is by no means true that the gunpowder is beginning to die out. Macedonia and Greece continued their old rhetoric for two days over the question of the name of the Macedonian state, which Greece has managed to have written in international documents as FYROM. Gligorov, who himself was the target of a bottle filled with gunpowder two years ago, said he absolutely had no intention of compromising on the issue of the name, which, according to him, has been the same since the time of his grandfather Gligorov. In Crete, Skopje and Athens repeated a conflict that began three years ago at the UN, where Macedonia has still been unable to build a lobby to change the names on international maps. Meanwhile, Albania and Macedonia, a little farther east, with an unsubdued Albanian population, are readily exchanging experiences that the Macedonian state needs in order to become a nation, and the Albanian nation needs in order to become a state. In this respect, Gligorov showed great patience, waiting for Nano for about an hour after Nano was delayed with Milošević. Although somewhat surprised, Gligorov did not show anyone that he was displeased when Nano asked for high-level schools for Albanians. He only said (Continued on page 5)
