The Macedonian surprise
By Blendi Fevziu
This is why this happened to us, of the Bulgarian police, we had [?] blocked, while we arrived in the city area of VMRD from Skopje.
It was the only scene that entered my memory, on a day walking in resistance, a basic question perhaps asked for the first time with such seriousness. “What will the fate of this Macedonian politics be decided by?” asked the representative, speaking with unexpected candor.
Our attention immediately shifted to what was happening in the small town of Kërçovë, where for the first time VMRD from Skopje was inspiring the most traditional segment of the Albanian electorate. Intimidation, and the aggression of the Bulgarian police against any other political leaning, which in these elections gave the new government an extraordinary victory.
Meanwhile, it was clear that the big battle was being fought in the two main Albanian camps, PPD and PDP, which had managed to maintain a fragile balance in the elections last June. Although the new electoral formats had changed a lot, a large part of the electorate remained undecided.
Macedonian political attacks will take a historic turn in the days to come. The first elections ended with a narrow result, to be decided in a runoff. Of the 18 seats that there were in parliament, only 12-26. [?] The votes were also divided almost perfectly between the two blocs. In the coming days it will become clear whether this will create a new political configuration in the country.
Macedonia today is entering another decisive phase. For Albanians, the question remains whether they will once again manage to impose their weight in the country’s political life.
Mediani: Referendum on the Constitution on 22 November
Mediani [?]: Referendum on the Constitution on 22 November
The media: President Rexhep Meidani announced yesterday the referendum for the approval of the constitution, which will take place on 22 November. The decision has sparked debate in political circles, because the date coincides with the 20th anniversary of the execution of Hysni Kapo and the fall of the communist regime of recent years [?]. The President of the Republic, Rexhep Meidani, stated that the date of the referendum was set on the basis of constitutional provisions. “The entire political spectrum should focus on the referendum campaign and on increasing participation,” he said.
The political crisis appears to be unblocked, pitting the two political blocs in the country against each other.
