BY YLLI PANGO It has been some time now that Albanians, beyond any partisan or political bias, have been faced with the choice: barbarism or civilization, primitivism or a normal life? We say beyond any partisan bias because, whoever may be the hand pushing criminals to act, whichever party, coalition or clan, in opposition or in power, above all, today we must face the choice of preserving the moral, civic, cultural and even democratic values that have taken root among us, however few they may be. We say this regardless of political influences, although it is well known that, in most cases, they have brought us all our national calamities, because ultimately it is not politicians who take up arms, commit crimes or act directly, but barbaric people, beings incited or goaded also by animal instincts, who burn and destroy, kill and maim, wreck and blow things up. These beings, who for the past year have been accustomed to terrorizing an entire people, whether incited or not, if they did not exist or if their heads were crushed, would not create opportunities even for the most despicable politicians to take us where they have taken us. So, where it is not possible to cut off the head “in the name of democracy,” or because we are dealing with emasculated rulers, let the blind limbs of evil be cut off. This is the only immediate solution, but it is necessary. There is no way to act except by one means: the dictatorship of the law in the name of civilization—the means of mercilessly eradicating evil, of locking madness away in an asylum, of mercilessly punishing those who know neither mercy nor human feeling. In 1930s America, there is the well-known example of the notorious gangster and robber of dozens of banks, Dillinger, who could not be arrested or convicted because he always escaped—not only because he was a major criminal, but also because the judges were corrupt. It was then decided that he and his gang should be killed, wherever they were found, without mercy. And people throughout America, exhausted and filled with hatred by his crimes, joined the manhunt. Almost the entire gang was killed, and the last one was Dillinger, as he was leaving the cinema. What happened throughout Albania a year ago, and a few days ago in Shkodër, could happen again on such a scale that everything comes to an end, and we may become the world’s unique example of the total victory of barbarism over civilization.
