In Kosovo, he came before the attackers and the Serbs, representing fire after the terrible reprisals, sacrificing the hopes for peace of hundreds of Albanian-Kosovars. With the crackle of gunfire, on Thursday morning the Serb forces unleashed the storm by entering Lower Prekaz, a quiet settlement where dozens of Albanian families lived. The large Serb police battalion, equipped with heavy weapons and snipers, surrounded the village and opened fire on the residents, killing women, children, and the elderly.
By midday, the fire had spread throughout the area and people were trying to escape, but many of them were left trapped. Smoke and screams covered the village as houses burned one after another. The wounded remained without help, while the special forces continued the operation. By evening, the toll was horrific: lifeless bodies, covered with blankets, and relatives searching for their loved ones.
In Pristina and other cities of Kosovo, the news of the massacre caused anger and shock. Representatives of the international community called for restraint and dialogue, but the violence had gained momentum. Albanian politicians in Tirana reacted by calling for NATO to be deployed in Albania and for a greater commitment from the West.
This was one of the most dramatic moments of that spring, when hope for a peaceful solution faded and the fear of a wider war became tangible for the entire region.
