The anomaly of diplomacy
By SOTIRAQ HONI
The diplomatic service, in the function of Tirana’s provisional government, would clearly understand the dangerousness of that political segment and, consequently, of this Albanian political class, which must be treated separately by any Arab government[?]. This minority is connected to a phenomenon: first, the appropriation, through the country’s sensitivities, of a small but elite post-Zogist segment that has decided to manipulate minds and lives for a malicious purpose and to use general suspicion for foreign interests. The consequence of this phenomenon is the diversity of sensitivities, especially among young people, who are unprotected from distortion. In such circumstances, communication becomes more difficult, especially with the media. So difficult that Western governments themselves, especially after the aid our country received from its geopolitical axis, refrain from direct confrontation with this marginalized, though not insignificant, category. This also explains the inability of our diplomacy to be more credible abroad.
Within this framework, it is understandable why some political circles have always preferred to replace dialogue with rhetoric, the state with improvisation, and agreement with emotional appeals. This behavior does not help Albania’s integration, nor the creation of a serious image in the world. It remains the duty of the institutions to remove clan influences and build a professional diplomacy, capable of representing the public interest rather than the calculations of the day.
A rare case in these 8 years of government
The Albanian army forcibly stops two Italian vessels
This has never happened before: if a foreign military force dared to enter our territorial waters, as the Italian government sounded the alarm, regarding the ships’ crew saying “no” they are Italian, the Minister of Defence issued an explanation about this event that same day.
According to reliable sources close to the Ministry of Defence, the Albanian army is carrying out maneuvers at sea and in these days there has been a tendency for some Italian vessels, acting under the guise of civilian aid, to penetrate Albanian waters. In the port of Durrës, on Saturday, the Albanian naval forces were put into motion after the entry of several foreign sea vehicles into prohibited areas was detected. It is learned that one of the vessels was physically prevented from continuing its movement and was warned with repeated signals. Ministry officials described this as an unprecedented case in these years of government.
In its statement, the Albanian side said that the army’s action had been in accordance with the law and with the obligation to defend sovereignty. Italian sources, on the other hand, requested clarification, claiming an operational misunderstanding. The issue remained under diplomatic follow-up during the day.
