Recent days have been marked by several spectacular police operations, including the arrest of Vlora’s “boss,” Zanët, and several other gang leaders, as well as the neutralization and prevention of a criminal operation, such as the one against the owner of FRESH, two days ago. Naturally, such successes by the police are encouraging, first and foremost because they show that the Albanian police have every possibility of emerging victorious in the difficult battle against crime. The successful operations of recent days also once again prove that the head of public order, Mr. Poçi, is to a considerable extent honoring the commitments he declared on the day he took charge of one of the most sensitive ministries, where his three predecessors, it can be said, had the misfortune of experiencing failure. But what draws attention is that the police machinery was set in motion after a wave of criticism and remarks from various quarters, especially from abroad, such as those connected with the cancellation of Holbrooke’s visit to Tirana. In fact, whenever the police and public-order structures have come under a barrage of criticism, someone has taken action, only, unfortunately, to return after a while to the usual routine. This happened on the eve of the Sarajevo meeting, when Prime Minister Majko, in meetings with public-order leaders, called for the elimination or neutralization of the gangs within a relatively short time. From such an experience, it is easy to conclude that the subjugation of criminals can never be achieved through campaigns conducted at particular times. It has been proven that every pause by the police forces, every drop in the intensity of their operations, immediately brings a resurgence of crime, and within a short time everything returns to square one.
