Koha Jonë

E Premte 22 Tetor 1999

The Americans and Albanian politics

Koha Jonë developed the full and truthful version of this interview, conducted a few days earlier. These have been subjected to a banal, defamatory manipulation. The intention was to cause personal damage to the diplomat, or even to Washington’s paternal stance, at a certain stage. The circulation of the published text, even in small print, lasts until the middle of the day, but the Albanian media immediately turned the false version of his interview into something else and used it to draw deliberate conclusions. Through the article below, we are offering it in full, as it belongs to the content of the newspaper in question. In some cases we also sought to preserve the wording of his expressions, in order to convey it as it is. You understand that we read it carefully and did not want to interpret it. Koha Jonë: You made a comment regarding the speculation that America is pursuing an anti-Albanian policy. In a moment when the country has been left in chaos, this is a serious issue. What do you think? Limprecht: There is no anti-Albanian policy. There is no conspiracy against Albania. There are many people in Washington who feel concerned about what is happening here. But we support stability and institutions, not individuals. Koha Jonë: What is your position on the political situation? Limprecht: Albania needs strong institutions, law and order. Politics must be responsible and must not use the crisis for narrow gains. Koha Jonë: Does the US have a preference for certain leaders? Limprecht: No. The US supports the democratic process and stability. We do not support particular individuals. Koha Jonë: How do you see the relationship between Tirana and Prishtina? Limprecht: We are determined to help both. Stability in Albania is also important for the region. page 2-3 US Ambassador in Tirana, Joseph Limprecht
